UCSC Students Request
Physician Interaction
Two student groups from UCSC have requested to interact with local physicians in two very different ways.
American Medical Student Association (AMSA) requests physician speakers each year. Here is the request for this academic year (2011-2012)from the club:
Hello! My name is Deirdra and I am the outreach and publicity officer for AMSA this academic year. I was a member of the club last year, and participated in the suture clinic as well as listening to the speakers from SCCMS who generously gave their time to us to attend some of our meetings. We would be absolutely thrilled to work with you again! We were hoping to have a physician join us for one of our meetings on November 4th. Our meetings are held at 5pm on Fridays. We're not picky as to what type of medicine the doctor practices, as we would love to hear from all different kinds of doctors. We would love to have a sort of Q & A, so it wouldn't be too formal. More just a space for students to ask questions about medicine and what it's like to be a doctor.
Some clarification points:
- We provide parking permits.
- The rooms are reserved from 5pm-6:30 pm.
- Our meetings are not every friday, but when we do have meetings they are on fridays at 5pm. If november 4th isn't a good date for any of the physicians to come in and speak to us, we're open to other suggestions for dates that would work better, so long as it is a friday at 5pm.

Global Medical Brigade is the world’s largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. They are looking for volunteer physicians to accompany them on these missions. They are traveling to Panama from March 25 - April 1, 2012 and to Honduras from June 17 - June 24, 2012.
Mission Statement:
Global Medical Brigades provides a holistic model for sustainable health care in under-served rural communities by conducting preliminary needs assessments, treating patients to the highest ethical standards, sponsoring referrals to those with needs beyond our capability, recording data for the production of quantitative reports, and working with other GB programs to improve the water, sanitation, and economic infrastructures.
Here is the link to the Health Care Professional packet, pages 14-17 discuss more detail about what the diseases physicians are most likely to encounter. I have attached the two brochures, however, they are meant to be more of a sponsor brochure rather than a recruitment brochure; it is still filled with great info. I also provided a video aimed to recruit doctors. Thank you so much!
